Prime's first therapy visit

I have to admit, I have been keeping a secret. We have been planning and training for Prime to take his Therapy Dog International Certification. As a Medical Student I am required to do 30 hours of service learning a year. One of the options we are given is to get our dog tested as a therapy dog and go to the nursing homes to visit. Yesterday we went and took our test. Here is a run down of our day.

Since Prime is still a 16 month old baby, he still gets the zoomies and can be a little rambunctious so we decided it would go to the dog park in the morning when i was done with my lab. We showed up at the dog park at noon and there was NO ONE there. Blast. Well we let him wander around for a while and chase Kevin a little bit. Well since it has rained every day for the last week here he got nice and muddy. Eventually a couple other dogs showed up but they were much smaller than him and not really in the mood to play. We were still trying to tire him out so we didn't want to bring him home and let him nap so.

We went to Petcetera, which is a really cute little boutique in the Uptown neighborhood of New Orleans. One of the services the offer is a self-service dog wash. One of the things TDI grades you on is the appearance of your dog and whether or not they will accept a friendly stranger grooming them. We had never been to petcetera before but it was lots of fun. They have raised bathtubs at about waist height. Now, Prime is a little weird about bath tubs. He hates the bathtub in our house and I'm not sure why. He doesn't mind getting baths and the free standing dog bath tub in my sister's back yard, he will jump into without provocation. So i was a little weary and I will admit it was a bit of a struggle to get him into the tub. However i suspect that was because the steps leading up to the tub were tiled and really small for his gait. Once we got him into the tub however, he had a blast and was a perfect gentleman. We washed him with some lovely orange oil shampoo and he got cuddled by all the ladies in the shop and the two policemen who walked in off the street and said "now that's a REAL dog."

After our fun bath time we had one more chore before we could head out to testing. One of the items on the test is a "leave it" command. They have to walk within reach of really yummy food and when told to "leave it" they have to leave it alone and keep walking. Needless to say we wanted him to have a full tummy so as not to be tempted. So we packed him back into the car and went home to eat. After his lunch he was whooped ( I was so happy) and tried to fall asleep. So we packed him back into the car and went to the testing site.

We were testing at a Wal-mart parking lot (classy i know) in a little piece of landscaping that was on the outside of the parking lot. When we got there, there were a few other dogs, which isn't a problem because Prime loves other dogs. Except that if the evaluator hears growling the dogs are automatically disqualified, so if she hears growling but can't tell what dog it is coming from then our dog could get DQed. So it was fun trying to keep all the dogs calm when there were a couple of snippy dogs there.

Okay, so on to the actual test. Kevin and I both wanted to qualify as handlers for Prime and i honestly was a little worried because most of the time Kevin is Prime's handler, at his training classes. That's not to say that I don't work with him just that when he has been training Kevin has been handling him. The other thing is that fairly early on we started working Prime with choke/pinch collars, just as a power steering device because he was stronger than us when he was going through his "I'm a puppy and i want to pull at the end of the leash" phase. The TDI requirements are that the whole test be done on a flat collar without negative reinforcement (which includes pulling back on your leash, yikes). So Kevin and Prime did their test first. The first part is just accepting a friendly stranger, letting the evaluator come up and shake the handler's hand, pet the dog, look at his front feet and play with his ears. Prime had no problems, he loves people!

The second set of tests was listening to commands, will your dog sit and down when you ask them. Will the stay while you walk away from them. Will they come to the end of a 10 foot leash when you call them. Everyone got a kick out of this one when they saw this face coming toward them.

The next stage was the distractors stage. He had to prove that he can deal with a friendly dog, so the evaluator walked past us with her sheltie and they had to not try to get to the other dog. He had to deal with medical equipment, people on crutches making loud noises. He had to deal with a jogger running across his path and a distracting noise, in this case she was shaking something in a dog food bowl. I have to admit he is a little hard to maneuver in a distracting crowd, especially with how spastic his tail is but he did well. He also had to deal with supervised separation for 3 minutes. The evaluator held the leash and we had to walk out of view for 3 minutes and he had to not be overly anxious. She said he was a little upset but then he settled right down and that she suspects that has more to do with age than anything.

The final and hardest part (for us humans) was finding children, they have to prove that they can handle kids which prime has. As a total aside, last time we went to the snow ball stand (a frequent outing for us) there was a 4-year old kid who was enamored with Prime. This kid toddled over and latched his hands over Prime's snout and the lifted his legs. I was so proud, Prime held perfectly still so as not to drop the child. He was holding a kid up off the ground, it was so amazing. The best part is that the mom had been trying to keep the kid away because well my big black dog must be mean. It was really amusing. Anyway, so we walked up to the front of the Wal-mart and waited for some children to walk outside. We had to walk near them and he had to not show any anxiety, which he didn't.

We then switched, i took over handling and we did the whole test again. By the end of it he was hot and tired but he did everything so well. I kept telling him in the run up to the test that if he passed we would get him a cheese burger on the way home. So when we got home he had a victory cheese burger in the driveway. I am very proud of our little boy. He is now certified with Therapy Dogs International which along with that comes a significant insurance policy on the dog. As an added bonus, if they qualify for TDI they automatically qualify for CGC so he is also now a Canine Good Citizen.

There are a couple of things I'd like to start working on with him for the therapy visits, like a command to tell him to stop wagging his tail and being rambunctious so that he doesn't inadvertently injure an elderly person, but this too shall come. He will begin doing some therapy work either the end of this month or the beginning of next month at which point i will be posting loads of pictures. Until then, he has earned himself some couch time with mommy.

Hi Guys, I wanted to show you why my mommy and daddy have been so busy recently and haven't been posting. These are some pictures from my daddy's first "night time simulation burn" what ever that means. I know that he came home happy and smelling kinda funny and that mommy was very happy with him. She even made him a special dinner, lucky duck. Mommy also seems really proud of the pitures she got with her flashy thing. So i guess I'll show you some of them...

Hey Guys,
Sorry it has been so long since I've updated. Things have been a little hectic around here lately. I will update fully soon but just wanted to let you guys know we are alive. Here are the quick updates.

1. Kevin has joined the fire department here in New Orleans, he is still in the academy but will graduate in May.
2. I am still working 2 jobs and trying to keep sane and make the time past before school starts.
3. Prime is doing well, still growing like a weed, i need to get a weight and height on him.
4. Mardi Gras just happened, we brought prime out to the parades and he did fantastically. He was the hit of the day! I have some great pictures but i have to find a cord that will fit my brother's camera before i can post them.

Snow Day

Horray, It's snowing!! For those of you who don't know, we live in New Orleans. It DOESN"T snow here. The last time it snowed at all was christmas day 2004 and then it was more like a snow flurry that lasted for about an our or so....This morning we woke up to a legitimate snow storm. I took some pictures cause it was such a novel occurrence and then we brought Prime over to play with his cousin Halley.

This was the very first experience Prime had with the white stuff...even though he was born in Minnesota it was summer when he was born.

Boy, i feel like it's been forever since I last posted, partially because it has been. There are a few funny stories that have come up that i wanted to tell everyone.

First, Prime has proven catagorically that he is NOT Jesus. We drove over to Houston, Tx in mid-november to see my mom and let her meet Prime. When we first got there we let him out to play in the common yard in the middle of her condo grouping. They have a nice large run-around-able yard and a pool. After playing for a while we decided that Prime had stretched his legs enough and we were headed back toward her house so that we could eat dinner. As we were messing with the fence trying to get it open, Prime decided we weren't moving fast enough. So he tried to walk on the water of the pool to get past us. Needless to say, it did not hold his weight. I wish that i could describe the look on his face as he fell in the water, it was priceless. At that point i ended up dropping everything i was carrying and reaching in to pull him out (which by the way, isn't the easiest thing to do when your dog weighs nearly 100 lbs and is flailing about) because everyone else was laughing so hard. Thankfully, he was fine, he had a little scratch under his eye from where he scraped it as he went in but otherwise is perfectly okay. He didn't even seem scared of the pool the next time he went out.

I also feel like we are hitting a little bit of a fear stage, which is a little amusing and annoying at the same time. For example, the other night we got a cold front that came through New Orleans so it rained ALL day. Well Prime and I were sitting in the living room while i watched some TV and he asked me three separate times to go outside. (As a side note, we have bells on our back door that are fantastic, they are from a company called Poochie Bells, http://www.poochie-pets.net/ which are fantastic because Prime audibly asks to go outside, which is really good because Kevin still has trouble reading doggie body language, anyway...)But everytime i get up and open the door he looks at me like I'm stupid, takes one look outside and turns around. The first time I figured it was because he might have accidentally hit the bells but even so normally he'll go outside turn around and come back in. Well after the second and third time he did it i was getting frustrated cause I'd gotten up 3 times in 7 or 8 minutes. So i finally decided that he was going out whether he wanted to or not, so i went out with him to see what the big deal was. He stood on the concrete for nearly ten minutes looking out into the wet rainy backyard....finally after some coaxing from me he went into the yard. It was the strangest thing though, all of a sudden he was afraid of getting wet.

Otherwise, he is doing really well, we have switched his food from Solid Gold to Bil-Jac after much consulting with our breeder and resources. I'm hoping the condition of his coat will improve!

Puppy Party

This weekend we brought prime out to meet my mom, who lives in Houston. Since we had to drive straight through their hometown anyway, we stopped in a lovely park on the way and met up with Paula and Zen. It was a great time. The boys took one look at each other, sized each other up and seemed to say "wait a second, I know you!" and procceded to maul one another, it was great! Here are some of the pictures i snapped during our play date, and considering i actually injured my camera after a trip to the dog park a couple weeks ago I was fairly pleased with them.

It was awesome!!! We are gonna stop back at Paula's house on Monday when we drive back to New Orleans. We are hoping to be able to set the beasts loose and let them romp. Regardless, it was a really neat time, i was so happy to meet another sibling and his wonderful mommy!

Prime made my morning today. Today i think he solidified his place in my heart and our lives and he did it just by being a dog. I had a kinda crappy night last night. This morning after 3 hours of sleep i had to get up and go to work. Well my alarm went off earlier than i thought so i had a little time to just sit around because i knew if i laid back down i would never make it to work today. So this morning while Kevin slept, I let Prime out and he crawled on to the couch and snuggled up under my elbow and i surfed the web while we cuddled. It was awesome. Up to this point when he sat on the couch with us we might get him to sit still for 30 seconds at a go. This morning he just snuggled up and kept me company, it was the perfect start to the day. I feel 110% better than i did last night, all because of my dog. What a great life.

Today my sister, brother-in-law and I took Prime and his cousin Halley out to the lake. We found a little sandbar and let them play in the water. The only camera i had was the one on my phone but i got these photos.

Puppy Park

New Orleans, while progressive in many things, is not very progressive when it comes to dog parks. Most of the levees in our city become impromptu doggie parks most days but we found out about a legetimate fenced in park to go play with other puppies. We found some time this afternoon and went. While we were out, i got some really great shots of Prime.

I started the evening by getting some really pretty

He even made friends with some of the other dog's humans. Who were really nice and let him slobber on them and gave him cookies.

All that running makes puppies VERY thirsty though, prime figured out the water fountain very quickly.

I just love this picture. Something about the orange of the sunset and the fact that he almost looks like he could be stacked out if it weren't for the fact that he's actually running very quickly.

So the long and short story is that we had a great time and i think we will have to make this a common playtime! It's such a pretty setting to, getting to watch the sunset on the lake

So tonight i decided to take prime's ears out of his wraps and they are doing pretty darn well, if i do say so myself. He occasionally holds them a little closer together than i would like but we are gonna go see the vet tomorrow and have her re-wrap them so that they finish perfectly. He is loosing teeth like a madman, tonight one of his canines came out and his normally neon yellow Wubba is now covered in pink blood stains. He is still doing well in his puppy class and tonight i endevored to get some pseudo-stacked pictures of him. Tomorrow is the first day off i have had in a long while so i'm gonna try to get some more pictures then. For now though (thanks to kevin) i have some to share. Like i said we tried to get some stacked pictures but much like Wasabi it was kind of a joke in balance. Here are the best

Prime weighs 74lbs as of yesterday. He finished his puppy shots and saw the vet about some thin hair which the vet says is fine. Although we did notice yesterday that one of his testicles is about half as large as the the other, we are taking a wait and see attitude. I know this is a quick update i will post a height as soon as i get one, he is sleeping soundly right now and i don't want to wake him.

Tonight Prime started his puppy obedience class. We were told that he is nearly ready for beginner class. I was a proud momma. He had a blast, somehow he bruised the bottom of one of his feet though. Hmmm.

Evacu-vacation

Okay, so as some of you know, the gulf coast just evacuated from Hurricane Gustav (really? what a name). So we packed up our house, my sister & father, the dogs (Prime, our dachshund, and my sister's german shepard), three cars and we boogied. We evacuated to a family friend's son's farm in Mathersville, Ms. We left at 6 pm on Saturday and we got there at 4 am on Sunay. A trip that would normally take 3 hours from our house.
Once we got there, we were happy to see that we were staying on a farm with 150 acres of land with numerous ponds. We spent basically the whole time hiking, letting the dogs swim and letting the puppys run and play and have a good time. I also got some really great pictures out of our little evacu-vacation.
We also played some search games, while we have yet to be able to get to the northshore to go see the SAR team, we have been playing search games with prime. We've been training him some with my sister's search dog and he is showing some promise. While we were evacuating we did some L-shaped run aways where he couldn't see me before he searched for me, there was also one 'runaway' where he found me in the vineyard before Halley. So i have great hopes for him.

I was starting to worry for a while that we were the only house that didn't get a "water dragon" because prime doesn't hate the hose but he's not crazy about it like some of the other babies. However, as soon as we showed them the pond he hopped right in!

In fact all of the puppies enjoyed the pond.

Then he tried sticking his whole head in the water! (Don't worry jen, we unwrapped his ears and let them dry after he got wet. It was a pain but he was having so much fun i couldn't deny him.

We played by a second pond on the property which was right next to the vineyard which we played some search games in.

Week of 8/25

Okay, so here are some recent pictures of our boy. He got his ears wrapped really throughly for the first time this last week and can you imagine he hasn't been able to rip them off yet. So he is now in a set of goal posts and we are excited cause they are starting to look like they should and are much more sturdy.

Today Prime learned an important lesson in our house today. If you are a good boy while you get a quick bath (cause you smell like sweaty dog), then afterward you get to play with the towel used to dry you off! Needless to say he loved that game.

However, i think these pictures really capture him better than any of the ones i've taken previously.

And Finally, This is Prime playing with his MEGA Wubba that his daddy bought him. I thought it was going to be "too" big. He just loves it. I swear that bottom ball is nearly the size of a soccer ball.

Hey Guys - So here are the updates. Prime weighs 47.6 lbs yesterday. We had his ears taken down from the cup and wrapped in tape. This first picture is awful because his ear is flopped down agaist the top of the head. So his ear doesn't actually look like a pit bull it is just a bad angle for the picture.

Obviously for this one it is flopped in the other direction. I guess Kevin's wish of them standing straight up right after we took them out of the cup is out the window. haha.

These next three, I'm trying to get a picture of him stacked to see what we think of him show-wise. We haven't worked very much on this skill so again, these were some of the best of the set.

First set of ear stitches came out last night. They were on the top of his ear. The bottom set of stitches comes out at 10:30a on Friday. We have an appointment to go and get stitches removed and let the vet do the first ear wrapping. I am going to be bringing my camera to get pictures of his ears completely unwrapped. We are then hoping that we can bring him out to be evaluated this weekend by the search and rescue team. Prime has made his daddy very happy in the last few days by really starting to "fetch" in earnest. Fetch is daddy's favorite game. He is still a little bit whiny however i think alot of that this week has had to do with having his ears taped to the top of his head. That is all in the way of updates at the moment. We are going to work on getting a weight in the next few days, i figured we would wait until we go see the vet on Friday to get a weight because he's getting a little cumbersome for me to hold and Kevin has been a little under the weather and i feel bad about asking him to weigh him, Plus we are going to the vet on friday and he has to learn how to get weighed sooner or later.
